Pet Emergency FAQ
When your pet is experiencing an emergency, we know how stressful and overwhelming it can be. At Northway Animal Emergency Clinic, we’re here to provide expert care and guidance every step of the way. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about pet emergencies and our services.
How do I know if my pet is having an emergency?
Pets can’t always communicate pain or discomfort the way we can, so it’s important to watch for warning signs. These may include:
- Difficulty breathing
- Bleeding that doesn’t stop
- Seizures or sudden collapse
- Vomiting or diarrhea with blood
- Ingestion of toxic substances
- Painful or swollen abdomen
- Difficulty urinating or defecating
If you notice any of these symptoms or feel something isn’t right, it’s better to err on the side of caution and seek immediate care. Call us at (518) 761-2602 for guidance.
Do I need to call before bringing my pet in?
While you’re not required to call ahead, doing so can help us prepare for your arrival and ensure we’re ready to provide the best care as quickly as possible. If your pet is experiencing a life-threatening condition, you can bring them directly to our clinic.
What should I bring with me?
If possible, bring:
- Any medications your pet is currently taking
- Their medical records or vaccination history
- A secure carrier or leash to keep them safe
- Payment information for treatment costs
If your pet has ingested something toxic, bring the packaging or label if available, as it can help our team provide the appropriate treatment.
What payment options do you accept?
We accept major credit cards, debit cards, CareCredit, and Scratchpay. Payment is required at the time of service to allow us to focus fully on providing urgent care to your pet.
Do you work with pet insurance?
Yes, we work with most major pet insurance providers. After treatment, we will provide you with a detailed invoice that you can submit directly to your insurance company for reimbursement.
What happens if my pet needs to stay overnight?
As we are not currently a 24/7 facility, we do not provide overnight care. If your pet requires extended monitoring, we will stabilize them and coordinate a transfer to a 24-hour facility for continued care. Our team will ensure you understand the next steps and provide a smooth transition.
Can I visit my pet during their stay?
For short-term hospitalization, visits may be limited due to the nature of emergency care and the need to prioritize patient stability. However, we’ll keep you updated on your pet’s condition and progress every step of the way.
